Circus History
Believe it or not Circus was conceived in England in 1768 by an entertainer called Philip Astley. He succeeded in  opening a venue in London where he could show trick horse riding to an enthusiastic public. Philip came up with a ring or circle (hence the word Circus) of 42 feet in diameter, the optimum size for riding round without taking up too much space.

Circus has evolved over the centuries so that modern circuses rarely have any animals at all in this country. Circus is under pressure from many other types of entertainment available nowadays but nothing beats the thrill and spectacle of a live circus extravaganza in a Big Top!
